This Master’s Course is a fantastic opportunity for third country students to join an exciting educational environment. Twenty student fellowships (21,000 €per year) will be available for the most promising third country applicants. The strong integration among three European leading Universitieswill provide a wide range of complementary expertises contributing tocreate a holistic preparation for the future graduates. The teaching staff will include 28 EU professors and 5 third-country scholars per year.By the agreement in force between the University of Bologna and the Universities in Munich and Vienna, students, beyond obtaining the Italian degree, LaureaSpecialisticain OrtofrutticolturaInternazionale, will also receive the corresponding degree from the Partner University in which he/she will have acquired the 30 credits required. La scienza della vegetazione è oggi un settore avanzato della ricerca ambientale. Dalla vegetazione, dai diversi stati di questo sistema che deriva dai processi di aggregazione delle popolazioni di specie vegetali, dipende infatti la diversità ambientale e la diversità del paesaggio. È quindi evidente che la scienza della vegetazione ha molte applicazioni nella gestione ambientale: per la conservazione degli habitat, che sono lo spazio della biodiversità, per una gestione sostenibile delle risorse naturali e per il monitoraggio a diversi livelli di scala degli effetti ecologici del “global change”, che caratterizza i nostri tempi.Il 44° Congresso della Società Italiana di Scienza della Vegetazione presenta una rassegna delle ricerche più recenti relativamente a questi temi, offrendo un panorama delle loro potenzialità applicative.Il primo simposio, è dedicato al tema CAMBIAMENTI CLIMATICI E VEGETAZIONE. Dopo un’introduzione circa lo scenario climatico italiano, presenterà alcuni risultati significativi sugli effetti del cambiamento climatico a breve e medio termine, attraverso ricerche che hanno sviluppato analisi di fenologia, dendrocronologia e di dinamica di popolazioni vegetali a livello anche internazionale.Il secondo simposio, dedicato alle NUOVE ESPLORAZIONI SULLA DIVERSITÀ DELLA VEGETAZIONE ITALIANA, sarà l’occasione per aggiornare lo stato delle conoscenze sulla diversità delle comunità vegetali e degli habitat che da queste dipendono. L’approccio di questi studi, ben noto ai ricercatori come “metodo” o “approccio” fitosociologico, utilizza le specie vegetali come variabili descrittive e consente quindi una conoscenza dettagliata della biodiversità vegetale di un territorio, la sua archiviazione in geodatabasi e la sua rappresentazione spaziale in carte della vegetazione. Giornata organizzata nell’ambito del
progetto Interreg IIIB VEGETPOLLOZONE
“Cooperazione transnazionale: danni da ozono sulla vegetazione. Comunicazione e sensibilizzazione degli attori pubblici a questa problematica”, con il patrocinio del Gruppo di Lavoro SISEF “Inquinamento e Foreste” e della Rete Informativa su Ozono e Vegetazione (RIO3-VEG) L’inquinamento da ozono continua ad essere un problema sensibile per la vegetazione, ma persistono lacune importanti nella nostra conoscenza degli effetti che l’ozono induce sulla vegetazione in campo.
Questo argomento sembra essere di scarso interesse per chi indirizza le politiche della ricerca, dato che non è stato inserito né nel VI né (finora) nel VII Programma Quadro dell’Unione Europea.
Tuttavia, l’Unione Europea legifera in materia, dato che ha preso il via il processo di revisione della normativa comunitaria per la protezione della vegetazione dall’ozono (Direttiva 2002/3/ CE).
I risultati di questo processo saranno di grande rilevanza per l’Europa mediterranea, che è tra le aree europee a maggior rischio da ozono.
Nel corso di questa giornata di studio, scienziati francesi, spagnoli e italiani faranno il punto sulle attività di monitoraggio e ricerca in corso nei loro paesi, con particolare riferimento alle attività condotte nell’ambito del progetto Interreg VEGETPOLLOZONE, sarà dato spazio a contributi volontari sull’ argomento, e si terrà una tavola rotonda incentrata sul trasferimento dei risultati scientifici ai policy makers e su come indirizzare le politiche della ricerca e della protezione della vegetazione dall’ozono.
Al termine della giornata, saranno possibili riunioni di gruppi di ricerca per programmare attività future e progetti coordinati.
La giornata è la prosecuzione ideale del coordinamento iniziato nel Novembre 2006, con la prima riunione RIO3-VEG (Rete Informativa su Ozono e Vegetazione) a Pisa.

To promote the participation of women in Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences the University of Groningen offers a prestigious fellowship programme, named after Rosalind Franklin, whose X-ray studies of DNA were crucial to solving its structure. Five fellowships are available in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The fellowships will be awarded to outstanding women scientists from any of the disciplines mathematics, physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, pharmacy, environmental studies, computing science and artificial intelligence.

RF Fellowships are funded with a generous startup package, worth around 200,000 euro.

L’VIII Convegno Nazionale sulla Biodiversità si terrà a Lecce dal 21 al 23 aprile 2008 ed avrà per tema “La biodiversità, una risorsa per sistemi multifunzionali”. A seguito di intese tra il Centro Interuniversitario Germoplasma Mediterraneo (C.I.G.M.) e il Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Biologiche ed Ambientali dell’Università del Salento, ai fini di un più funzionale collegamento con la realtà produttiva e di mercato, è stata accolta la disponibilità a collaborare dell’Associazione Slow Food e delle associazioni produttori biologici che operano da anni per la promozione delle produzioni tipiche dell’agricoltura italiana.

Il convegno sarà articolato sulla base dei contributi che saranno proposti e per i quali si richiede un breve riassunto da predisporre secondo lo schema predefinito (file: riassunto biodiversità.rtf) reperibile in rete alla pagina www.biodiversita2008.unile.it. Contributi più lunghi o scritti in maniera difforme da quanto riportato sul modello non saranno accettati.
Il termine ultimo della presentazione dei riassunti è fissato improrogabilmente per il 21 Gennaio 2008. I testi, dovranno pervenire alla segreteria organizzativa in forma elettronica, come file RTF, via e-mail all’indirizzo: biodiversita2008@unile.it. La denominazione del file dovrà riportare il nome del primo Autore (es: Rossi.rtf). Un volume contenente tutti i riassunti sarà distribuito agli iscritti al Convegno, mentre gli Atti del convegno saranno pubblicati successivamente. Ogni Autore può presentare più contributi ma è auspicabile che a ciascun riassunto corrisponda almeno un iscritto al Convegno. Per quanto riguarda gli Atti del Convegno saranno accettati contributi di 2-3 pagine (rispettando un formato che sarà definito successivamente) nella misura di 1 contributo per ciascun iscritto/a al Convegno.
Le comunicazioni orali al Convegno saranno in lingua italiana, tranne che per gli ospiti stranieri. Il testo delle diapositive e dei poster potranno essere anche in lingua inglese, per permettere lo scambio di informazioni tra gli ospiti stranieri ed i ricercatori presenti.

FuncFiber International Symposium, 2008
The 3-day FuncFiber 2008 international symposium will be held between March 10-12, 2008. It will address cutting edge topics in current wood biology related research. Specific areas to be covered include forest tree genomics and biotechnology, wood biosynthesis and development, and cutting edge techniques in wood research.
The meeting will be held at Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) in Sweden and will be accompanied by a social programme to allow you to meet and discuss with other researchers. On the 10th of March there will be a welcome wine reception and buffet meal together with a poster session. On the 11th of March we will hold a symposium dinner.

Conifer Translational Genomics Network (CTGN) (Howe): The student will conduct research with the CTGN, a large multi-university team that is conducting research, education, and extension on marker-based breeding in forest trees as part of the USDA-NRI Coordinated Agricultural Project (CAP) Program. Information on the CTGN can be found at

The student will focus on quantitative genetics research aimed at discovering associations between molecular markers and quantitative traits in operational breeding programs of Douglas-fir, and will contribute to the overall research, education, and extension goals of the project. Primary traits of interest include growth, cold hardiness, and wood properties.

Functional genomics of crown architecture and competition in poplar trees (Howe). The goal of this project is to understand the genes responsible for the shade-avoidance syndrome (SAS) in poplar trees, and to use that knowledge to maximize biomass production in plantations. The student will assist in a comprehensive analysis of the phytochrome gene family in Populus (PHYA, PHYB1 and PHYB2) in relation to internode elongation, apical dominance, leaf area development, and branching in plants grown in greenhouses and growth chambers. We will characterize light signaling pathways, cross-talk among genes, and transcriptional cascades involved in the SAS.
This is a collaborative project among scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oregon State University, West Virginia University, and ArborGen, LLC

Functional genomics in Populus (Strauss). The student will conduct research under the Wessela Scholarship to identify genes that affect tolerance of abiotic or biotic stresses, or efficiency of associated genetic modification and development processes. Examples of potential research topics that students can choose from include: association genetic mapping or activation tagging of genes for salinity tolerance; mapping and functional analysis of DNA methylation in the poplar genome; novel methods for improving the efficiency of regeneration of transgenic cells; and development of new approaches for imparting sterility to reduce ecological risks of gene flow.

Pacific Northwest Tree Improvement Research Cooperative (PNWTIRC) (Howe). The student will conduct research for the PNWTIRC, a cooperative of universities, governmental agencies, and private companies that conducts forest genetics research in support of applied tree improvement (http://www.fsl.orst.edu/pnwtirc). Current research topics include genetics and breeding for improved wood quality, design and management of miniaturized seed orchards, and incorporating genetic effects into growth and yield models.

Climate change problem analysis (Howe). The student will assist a team of researchers and land managers to (1) develop a multi-disciplinary climate change taskforce; (2) conduct a literature review and problem analysis that will (i) describe how trees are likely to respond to alternative climate change scenarios, (ii) evaluate potential genetic and silvicultural options for dealing with climate change, and (iii) develop a strategic plan for filling important information gaps; and (3) implement an outreach education program to inform forest managers and policy makers about the potential effects of climate change and their forest management options. Soil respiration in a young mixed forest: spatial and temporal variability

Context: We seek a Post-Doctoral researcher to investigate the climatic, soil chemical and microbiological parameters controlling soil respiration in a mixed forest plantation. The interdisciplinary research will be performed collaboratively with the Laboratory of Microbial Ecology (Prof. M. Carnol), Laboratory of Atmospheric and Planetary Physics (Prof. L. François) at Liège University and the Unit of Biosystem Physics at FUSAGx (Prof. M. Aubinet). Research will be performed within the frame of the project “Estimation of net CO2 exchanges between forested ecosystems and atmosphere using flux towers: soil respiration, eddy covariance and modelling.” This project is granted by the Belgian National Research Council (FNRS). The experimental site is situated in the Belgian Ardennes and associated to the CarboEurope network. Eddy covariance and micrometeorological measurements are performed since 2006. Several soil respiration campaigns were developed in 2006 and 2007. Both manual and automatic measurements will be performed at the site, in parallel to soil chemical and microbiological parameters in the laboratory. Specific aims of the project include:
- Study of soil respiration response to climate variables, including in particular temperature, soil humidity, and water table height.
- Analysis of the inter-annual variability of respiration flux
- Study the soil respiration variability in relation to vegetation species, leaf chemistry and
decomposition dynamics and microbial activity.
Depending on the qualifications and interests of the candidate, specific measurements/topics may be included.
Responsibilities: Primary responsibility will be to conduct and develop research mentioned above, analyze results, present the results at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Required qualifications: PhD in Biology, Ecology, Biogeochemistry. The candidates should not have had their residence or main activity (study, employment) in Belgium during more than 24 months during the last 3 years and have obtained their PhD after October 1st, 2002.
Candidates should have a strong interest in soil physics and microbiology (training will be provided).
They should demonstrate the ability to conduct soil flux measurement and data analysis. The candidate should be able to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and to meet deadlines.
Employment status: Post Doctoral grant, to be obtained from the Belgian National Research Council in the frame of a FRFC project "Estimation des échanges nets de CO2 entre des écosystèmes forestiers et l’atmosphère avec des tours à flux: respiration du sol, covariance de turbulences et modélisation. »
Full-time position, Duration: 36 months, Salary 35 kEuros/year.
